An Anthropic study showed junior engineers using AI scored 50% on a Trio library quiz vs. 67% for those who worked by hand, with the AI group's wins concentrated among those who asked conceptual questions rather than treating the model as a code vending machine. The fix isn't to avoid agents but to use them as a teaching partner: form hypotheses before prompting, ask why, inspect diffs, predict failures, and stay in the loop so your mental model moves with the agent's work.
